Lettuce Seeds

timeline

background

We kept the stems of a couple storebought romaine lettuce heads, planted them in water, and let them regrow. They bolted to an impressive ~3ft height, bloomed, and produced a handful of viable seeds. So viable, in fact, that five of them we missed fell into a nearby pot for green onions and sprouted immediately.

In the future, we’ll probably try to prevent bolting. But it’s pretty heartening how easy it is to get viable seeds.
